Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
High-temperature coloured enamels on white tin glaze: mid to late eighteenth-century palette.
Buff earthenware visible through rim chips: soft tin-glazed pottery.
Glaze pinholing and pooling across the reverse: traditional kiln firing.
Pierced hole through the unglazed foot rim: early provision for wall hanging.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 18th-century Dutch Delftware charger plate belongs to the tin-glazed earthenware ceramic category, manufactured in the 1770s. The circular piece has an off-white tin glaze decorated with hand-painted polychrome enamel, displaying floral medallions and a geometric lattice pattern in green, brown, blue, manganese, ochre, and yellow. The surface shows minor rim chips, small scratches, and tin glaze fritting from age and use. Measuring 5 cm high, 30.2 cm wide, and 30.2 cm deep, it sits securely on a black display stand during inspection. In a modern interior, the plate provides an ornamental display piece suited for placement on a sideboard top or within a cabinet setting. The polychrome decoration extends rim-to-rim across the ceramic body, revealing the characteristic tin-glazed finish of Dutch production from this period. The object combines historical craftsmanship with vibrant enamel colours, suiting English Country House interior styles and ceramic collections.

FAQs

Polychrome Dutch Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in the Netherlands decorated with multiple coloured enamels, such as green, red, blue, and manganese, inspired by both Asian porcelain and European floral motifs.

Pieces were shaped from local clay, fired once into biscuit earthenware, and dipped in an opaque white tin glaze before being hand-painted with metallic oxide pigments and fired a second time.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities, a soft glaze texture, and characteristic edge chipping or fritting where the brittle tin glaze exposes the underlying earthenware body.

Display the charger upright on a plate stand, incorporate it into a wall-mounted plate gallery, or position it on a sideboard or mantelpiece to add historical texture to modern room schemes.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid using abrasive chemical cleaners, and never submerge the ceramic in water or place it in a dishwasher to prevent glaze degradation.
