An epergne is an ornamental centrepiece used for holding fruit, flowers, or sweetmeats, which reached the height of its popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods for elaborate dining table displays.

These pieces are typically crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as spinning, soldering, and hand-chasing, often featuring multiple detachable trumpets or baskets supported by an intricate framework.

Authentic pieces are identified by clear hallmarks stamped on the metal, indicating the assay office, makers mark, and date letter, alongside appropriate age-related surface wear and construction methods consistent with the period.

An antique silver epergne can be used as a striking focal point on a dining table or sideboard, either left empty to showcase the polished metalwork or filled with seasonal foliage for a classic touch.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a high-quality non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to maintain the patina, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip historical oxidisation from recessed details.
