FAQs

Chinoiserie is a European interpretation and imitation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, highly popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, characterised by hand-painted motifs, lacquerwork, and gilt details depicting landscapes, figures, and architecture.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as pine, oak, or mahogany, coated with multiple layers of resin-based lacquer, and finished with intricate hand-painted or gilt motifs using gold leaf, often complemented by brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as natural craquelure in the lacquer surface, hand-cut dovetail joinery in the drawers, hand-carved elements, and traditional hand-applied gilt work rather than modern printing techniques.

This type of statement furniture works effectively as a focal point in a study or living space, pairing well with minimalist modern seating to highlight the ornate details while maintaining a balanced room composition.

Maintain antique lacquer by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding chemical solvents, silicone polishes, and excessive moisture, and keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking.
