Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Solid round-head rivets joining the shovel pan: mid-nineteenth-century assembly.
Embossed cabbage-rose bouquet on the shovel: popular mid-Victorian hearth design.
Heavy cast brass feet and finials: traditional nineteenth-century foundry casting.
Dark oxidisation and pitting in deep recesses: many decades of heat exposure.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian fireplace accessory set comprises a matched pair of cast brass fire dogs and three corresponding fire irons, all rendered in a bright brass colour. The fire dogs feature upright standards supported by scrolled feet and crowned with prominent fluted urn finials. A set of three fire irons rests horizontally across the dogs, including a poker, a shovel with an engraved spade blade, and fire tongs, each designed with a rope twist or barley twist shaft. The fire dogs stand 40 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 21 cm deep, while the individual fire irons measure 64.5 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. Suitable for an English Country House interior, this set functions as a decorative and practical arrangement for a fireplace hearth. The ensemble provides both the functional hearth furniture required to manage a fire and decorative metalwork that coordinates with traditional period fire surrounds. The open structure of the dogs and the long twisted handles allow the irons to sit neatly across the front when not in active use in a living room, drawing room, or study.

FAQs

Fire dogs, or andirons, support burning logs in an open hearth to promote airflow beneath the fuel, while companion fire irons such as tongs, pokers, and shovels allow safe adjustment of coals and clearing of ash.

During the Victorian era, hearth accessories were predominantly constructed from solid cast brass, wrought iron, or steel, frequently finished with hand-engraved details and turned components.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-chased or engraved motifs, spiralled or twisted shafts, visible casting seams, and subtle surface oxidisation rather than modern uniform lacquer finishes.

A complete brass hearth set can be displayed within an inactive fireplace opening or alongside a contemporary stove to introduce warm metallic accents and historic visual texture.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying unlacquered metal polish sparingly to preserve the natural aged patina in carved recessed areas.
