This traditional Afghan wool rug originates from 1930 in North Afghanistan. It displays a rectangular hand-knotted pile construction with a gold field, dark blue octagonal gul motifs, and geometric lattice borders enclosed by hand-tied fringe at both ends. The thick pile uses tough lustrous wool on wool foundations. The piece measures 190 cm high, 148 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. Appropriate for a gentleman's library or study, the rug suits placement on wooden or stone floors to bring warm texture to a traditional interior scheme. The visible design incorporates alternating rows of four large octagonal guls down the centre, complemented by intricate border patterns and natural wear appropriate to its age.

Afghan tribal rugs are traditionally woven by nomad and semi-nomadic weavers, including Turkmen, Ersari, and Uzbek groups in northern Afghanistan. These carpets are distinguished by their geometric motifs, most notably repeated octagonal gul designs, which historically signified tribal identity.

Traditional Afghan carpets are constructed entirely from hand-spun sheeps wool, forming both the pile and the underlying warp and weft foundation. Dyes are historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, producing deep reds, warm golds, ochres, and dark blue accents.

Authentic hand-knotted Afghan rugs feature slight variations in weave and design symmetry, visible knotting on the reverse side, and soft wool warps. Natural dye variations, known as abrash, create subtle horizontal colour shifts throughout the pile.

Designers often use warm gold and ochre Afghan rugs to ground neutral rooms, pairing them with dark leather, mid-century timber furniture, or contemporary neutral sofas. The strong geometric motifs provide visual structure without overwhelming modern minimalist or eclectic interiors.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating brush bar to protect the wool pile. Clean liquid spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth and mild wool detergent, and have the rug professionally hand-washed periodically.
