Art Nouveau fire screens emerged during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, characterised by organic motifs, flowing asymmetrical lines, and hand-worked metal panels that reflected the Arts and Crafts movements rejection of mass production.

These decorative hearth accessories were typically constructed using a combination of hand-beaten sheet metals such as copper or brass, supported by a sturdy framework of wrought iron or cast iron for stability near open flames.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-hammered repousse work with tool marks on the reverse, traditional joinery methods like rivets or hand-forging, and natural patination consistent with age and exposure to heat.

An antique fire screen functions as a striking sculptural focal point in a living room, adding texture and warmth whether placed in front of an active fireplace or used as a decorative accent within an empty hearth.

Maintenance involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip the historic oxidisation and patina, preserving the natural finish developed over decades of use.
