Chinese export silver encompasses items created by Chinese silversmiths primarily for Western markets, often featuring traditional local iconography combined with European functional forms.

These pieces were typically crafted from high-purity sterling or coin silver, utilizing artisan techniques such as hand-chasing, repousse, engraving, and filigree work.

Authentic pieces usually bear artisan makers marks or pseudo-hallmarks in a character or Latin script format, alongside testing for high silver purity and exhibiting age-appropriate oxidisation and wear.

They make excellent tabletop objects of curiosity, often displayed on a coffee table, desk, or within a cabinet alongside other vintage metallic artifacts.

Preservation involves storing pieces in a low-humidity environment, handling them with clean cloths or gloves to prevent skin oils, and minimising abrasive cleaning to protect the original patina.
