Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This early twentieth-century table lamp is executed in the Black Forest style from linden wood and fabric, measuring 39 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep. The piece takes the form of a dark brown, hand-carved standing bear with a detailed carved fur texture and an open mouth expression, holding a wooden sphere above its head that supports a conical cream-coloured fabric lampshade with metallic gold trim. The sculpture rests upon a turned circular wooden base with moulded edge details. Rewired with corded flex and fitted with an authentic switch, the lamp is fully PAT tested. Ideal for placement on an office desk or side table within a study, library, or Highland hunting lodge interior, this decorative lighting object provides focused illumination while serving as a sculptural focal point. The dark wood tones and naturalistic animal motif complement traditional and rustic interior schemes alike, bringing both functional utility and sculptural interest to a domestic setting.

FAQs

Originating in the Brienz region of Switzerland in the early 19th century, Black Forest wood carving became famous for highly detailed depictions of native wildlife, particularly bears. Local artisans turned traditional craft into a thriving industry catering to grand tour tourists and international collectors.

Artisans primarily used dense local hardwoods, most notably linden wood (lime wood), walnut, and pear wood. These timbers allowed for crisp, intricate carving details such as fur textures, natural movement, and detailed facial features.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved tool marks, realistic proportions, crisp details like carved fur and glass eyes, and natural wood grain finishes. Many bear figures display expressive, animated faces characteristic of Brienz woodcarvers.

A Black Forest lamp works as a whimsical focal point on an executive office desk, side table, or bookcase shelf. Pair it with dark timber, leather accessories, and warm textiles to complement a traditional library or rustic lodge aesthetic.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a soft microfibre brush to clean carved crevices. Apply high-grade natural beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood and protect against drying or cracking, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
