Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a layer of silver onto a copper base, predominantly produced from the mid-18th century until the introduction of electroplating in the 1840s.

These items were constructed by fusing sterling silver sheets to a copper ingot under high heat and pressure, often featuring weighted bases filled with resin, plaster, or wood to provide stability.

Authentic pieces often reveal a thin line of copper along the cut edges or seams where the base metal shows through wear, and they typically lack the hallmarks found on solid sterling silver items.

They can be used as a striking centrepiece on a dining table or placed on a mantlepiece to introduce metallic contrast and classic neoclassical elegance into contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with non-abrasive silver polishes specifically formulated for plated items, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the thin silver layer and expose the copper beneath.
