This late Victorian gentleman's correspondence desk dates to circa 1900 and originates from England. Constructed from rosewood with satinwood and boxwood inlay, the piece exhibits deep caramel hues, striking grain patterns, and a green leather writing skiver. The stepped upper superstructure incorporates a central mirror plate behind an arcaded back rest, flanked by canted compartments topped with pierced brass galleries and fitted with small drawers. A lower suite comprises two deep side drawers and a central drawer, all dressed with brass swing handles and brass-lined locks. The whole stands upon slender tapering legs with brass castors. Measuring 107 cm high, 101.5 cm wide, and 56.5 cm deep, this writing table provides versatile storage and a comfortable surface for correspondence. It serves as a practical addition to a study, home office, or reception room, offering integrated document compartments and a dedicated writing area within a graceful profile.

A late Victorian correspondence desk, often inspired by French bonheur du jour styles, is a compact writing table designed for personal letter writing, equipped with small drawers, stationery compartments, and a flat skiver writing surface.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut, embellished with satinwood or boxwood marquetry, brass galleries, and gold-tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut marquetry inlays with subtle surface variations, dovetail joinery inside drawers, cast brass hardware displaying natural patination, and original ceramic or brass castors on the legs.

Position the desk against a neutral feature wall in a study or living area, pairing it with a tailored contemporary chair and understated desk lamps to highlight the intricate wood grains and marquetry.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax periodically along the grain; treat the leather skiver with specialist leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
