Charles II period furniture, spanning the late seventeenth century, is characterised by robust construction, the prominent use of native timbers such as oak and walnut, and often features geometric mouldings and turned elements.

Pieces from this era were typically constructed using solid hardwoods like oak and walnut, joined with traditional techniques such as mortise and tenon, hand-cut dovetails, and pegged joints, often incorporating applied geometric panel framing.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery, hand-planed timber surfaces with appropriate age-related patina, iron or brass hardware consistent with the era, and handmade drawer construction lacking modern machine marks.

This type of foundational piece provides historical contrast in modern spaces; place it against a neutral wall as a focal storage unit, keeping surface styling minimal with a simple tray or sculptural object to let the timber grain take precedence.

Maintain antique timber furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and nourish the surface periodically using traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
