Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 17TH CENTURY:
Pegged tenon joints at frame intersections: joined construction before modern glueing.
Drawers grooved along sides to slide on runners: late seventeenth-century cabinetmaking.
Rebated drawer fronts secured with iron nails: early joinery before dovetailed boxes.
Applied split-turned mouldings on the stiles: late seventeenth-century decorative style.
Wide vertical backboards secured with nails: hand-prepared secondary timber.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

The piece demonstrates traditional craftsmanship and materials through a rectangular form containing six small drawers arranged in two upper and four lower sections, fitted with turned wooden knobs. Decorative elements include geometric panel mouldings on the drawer fronts, split-spindle turnings on the vertical side pilasters, a dentil-style carved upper frieze, and a scalloped apron along the base. The chest operates as a functional storage item measuring 71.5 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. It fits easily into living rooms, hallways, or bedrooms as a practical accent unit for contemporary interiors requiring compact antique storage.

FAQs

Jacobean furniture, originating in 17th-century England, is defined by sturdy oak construction, geometric panel mouldings, split-spindle ornamentation, and low, heavy proportions. Pieces from this era often feature applied turnings and panelled drawer fronts.

Chests from this era were primarily constructed using native solid English oak. Drawer linings were typically crafted from oak or pine, joined with mortise and tenon or early dovetail joinery, and secured with wooden pegs.

Authentic 17th-century chests display specific construction markers such as side-running drawers, hand-carved geometric mouldings, thick saw marks, hand-forged iron nails or keyhole escutcheons, and natural wear around the feet and knobs.

A dark oak chest provides rich visual weight when placed against neutral painted walls. Balance the early timber texture by pairing it with clean-lined modern lighting, contemporary artwork, or simple ceramic decorative objects.

Maintain historical oak by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity changes to prevent timber movement or splitting.
