This nineteenth-century Art Nouveau coal bin is an English Country House fireside accessory shaped as a cylindrical vessel. Fabricated from brass, the piece displays a warm gold colour with a polished finish and natural age tarnish. The domed lid includes a round turned finial handle at the apex. Three vertical strap-work handles run down the body, embellished with distinctive whiplash curves at the top and base. The vessel rests upon three stylised cast paw feet protruding below the base. The piece measures 44 cm high by 37 cm wide and 37 cm deep. This coal bin sits neatly beside a fireplace hearth in a living room or study to store coal, logs, or kindling while adding period character to an interior.

FAQs

Emerging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Art Nouveau coal bins are hearth containers designed to store fuel for home fireplaces, characterised by organic lines, stylised plant motifs, and whiplash curves.

Antique coal bins were predominantly crafted from sheet brass, copper, or cast iron, often featuring hand-riveted seams, repousse decoration, and fitted metal lining inserts to withstand heavy use and moisture.

Authentic Art Nouveau brass pieces typically display asymmetrical organic motifs, hand-hammered textures, integrated cast handles or feet with sinuous curves, and evidence of historical hand-polishing or natural oxidisation in crevices.

An antique brass coal bin can be repurposed as an elegant holder for firewood logs, rolled throw blankets, or potted house plants alongside a hearth, stove, or empty living room corner.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and if desired, clean gently using a specialised brass polish applied with a microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that could strip the original aged patina.
