Standard lamps, or floor lamps, gained widespread popularity in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods as electrical lighting became common in domestic homes, often featuring weighted bases and adjustable columns.

Authentic period standard lamps are typically constructed from cast or spun brass, heavy bronze, or turned timber, often utilizing weighted iron interior bases for stability and incorporating intricate surface chased detailing.

Key indicators of age include original weighted cast-iron base plates, period-appropriate twisted fabric wiring or threaded brass lampholders, patination on the metal surface, and traditional screw construction rather than modern welded joints.

Position the piece in an unutilised corner or beside a sofa to provide layered ambient lighting, pairing the metallic finish with complementary textures such as wool, leather, and patterned textiles to create visual warmth.

Maintain the metalwork by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid using harsh chemical metal polishes, which can strip the natural aged patina and historical surface finish.
