Delft polychrome pottery originates from the Netherlands, particularly the town of Delft, where workshops produced tin-glazed earthenware heavily inspired by imported Chinese and Japanese porcelain during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Authentic pieces are crafted from local clay, fired into earthenware, coated in an opaque white tin-glaze (known as maiolica or delftware glaze), and hand-painted with metallic oxide pigments before a final transparent lead glaze firing.

Authentication involves examining the paste body, glaze crazing, hand-painted brushwork imperfections, kiln stilt marks on the reverse, and typical pigment characteristics such as cobalt blue, iron red, and manganese purple.

These decorative plates can be displayed on plate rails, mounted securely on walls as art pieces, or showcased on specialist stands within traditional or eclectic room schemes.

Keep antique ceramics away from direct sunlight and high humidity, clean only with a soft dry cloth, and never submerge them in water or use chemical cleaning agents due to the porous nature of the earthenware body.
