Description

This charming kilim was probably woven in the Oltenia region, Romania in the early 20th century. The fine wool on cotton foundation, and tapestry technique with subtle use of curved wefts all point to that region. The central flowering vase with other scattered floral ornaments are very typical of the folk style of the Balkans, was very much in vogue as wall decoration right up to the 20th century.. In this rug the subtle pale grey/green background contrasts with the dark green border while all the other colours are very pale and subtle. This is a very decorative kilim which would work well in any number of settings. It has survived in excellent condition.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this East European Kilim to the 1920s.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

East European kilims are flat-woven rugs characterised by distinctive floral motifs, often featuring botanical sprays or urn designs inspired by local folk traditions and western European textiles.

These pieces are traditionally crafted with handspun wool for both the warp and weft, often dyed using natural colourants to achieve muted, harmonious tones.

Authenticity is determined by examining the slit-weave construction, wool quality, natural dye oxidation, and hand-knotted fringe details characteristic of regional village production.

Such textiles provide texture and organic pattern, working well as foundational floor coverings in neutral spaces or layered over larger sisal matting for a collected look.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialist cleaning when necessary, and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
