Description

This larger scale solid silver presentation model depicts a traditional Maltese sailing or fishing boat.

The model is beautifully handmade in solid silver with Maltese silver hallmarks in several places. It is displayed onto an ebonised oval moulded wooden stand with a silver presentation plaque which is inscribed: Presented to H E Sir Robert Laycock by the Palace staff in token of respect May 1959.

Robert Laycock was a highly distinguished Army officer with the final rank of Major General. He was best known for his influential role in establishing and commanding the British commandos during the Second World War. After a highly distinguished military career, he finally held the position of the Chief of Combined Operations, succeeding Lord Louis Mountbatten in this role.

Silver presentation models were frequently commissioned by military personnel, institutions, or civilian groups to commemorate significant service, retirements, or royal appointments, often featuring engraved plaques detailing the recipient and occasion.

These models are typically handcrafted using sterling or high-grade silver sheet metal, soldered framework, and fine wire rigging, mounted on turned wooden bases with engraved metal plaques.

Authentic pieces are identified through hallmark stamps indicating purity and origin, hand-engraved dedication inscriptions, period-appropriate construction methods, and natural tarnishing indicative of age.

Position the piece as a focal point on a dark wood executive desk, a library bookshelf, or a mantlepiece where its reflective metallic finish contrasts with traditional or transitional interior palettes.

Preserve silver models by dusting gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoiding abrasive chemical dips that can damage soldered joints, delicate rigging, or historical patination.
