1900 - 1920
Sold 27 January 2025 · Robert Belcher Antiques
This “Cornish Copper Arts and Crafts Charger by J. F Poole of Hayle, Cornwall, England” found a buyer.

It was listed by Robert Belcher Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This large and highly decorative charger was made at the Cornish Arts and Crafts Copper Works, J. F. Poole of Hayle.

They operated at the same time as the Newlyn School, late 19th early 20th century producing similar hand crafted decorative copper ware.

This large and important example is in beautiful untouched condition. It retains all of its original light and dark patinated surfaces which have often been lost over the past century with polishing.

The charger is made from heavy gauge hammered copper.

At its centre, there is an impressive 18th century high masted sailing ship out at sea and circling around its perimeter there are a group of dragon fish all deeply hammered and embossed into the thick copper and skilfully finished with sharp hand chased detailing.

The charger has its original shaped hanging loop on the reverse and is clearly stamped “ Hand Made” in the copper. A trade mark of J. F. Poole.

These large rare chargers from this prestigious Cornish manufacturer rarely come onto the market and most often not in this lovely original condition.

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, promoting traditional handcraftsmanship, simple forms, and the use of local materials such as copper.

Pieces were typically hand-hammered or raised from sheet metal, utilising repousse and chasing techniques to create raised relief designs, often finished with planished textures.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic tool marks from hand-hammering, natural patination, and maker stamps or signatures characteristic of specific guilds or regional workshops.

Copper metalwork adds warmth and texture to modern schemes and can be mounted on walls as focal art pieces or displayed on surfaces to contrast against neutral or dark paint palettes.

Antique copper should be dusted gently with a soft cloth. Harsh commercial chemical cleaners and abrasive polishes should be avoided to preserve the historic patina and surface integrity.
