The Animalier movement refers to the realistic and dynamic depiction of animals in art, which gained immense popularity in 19th-century France through notable sculptors who focused closely on anatomical precision and lifelike behaviour.

These works were traditionally produced using the lost-wax casting method (cire perdue) or sand casting, utilising high-quality copper-alloy bronze to capture intricate surface textures and rich patination.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining the depth and quality of the patina, foundry marks, artist signatures cast into the base, and the sharpness of chisel work and chasing applied after casting.

Such pieces can be positioned on a sturdy mahogany desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf to act as a focal point, pairing well with classic leather-bound books and traditional wooden furnishings to add historic character.

Maintain antique bronze by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to protect the historic patina from atmospheric moisture and oxidation.
