FAQs

A tinder pistol is a domestic device used prior to the invention of safety matches to quickly generate a flame for lighting candles, pipes, and hearth fires by striking a spark into tinder using a flintlock mechanism.

They were typically constructed using brass or steel for the lock and frame components, paired with wooden grips made from hardwoods such as walnut or oak, often featuring engraved decorative details.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-engraved metalwork, period-appropriate ferrous and copper-alloy oxidisation, correct mechanical tolerances for 18th or 19th-century lockwork, and integrated candle holders.

Displaying the piece upon a bookshelf, mantlepiece, or desk allows it to serve as a conversational sculptural object that complements historical or eclectic interior schemes.

Preservation requires keeping the item in a stable environment away from high humidity, occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to metal surfaces to prevent corrosion, and dusting the wooden grip with a soft, dry cloth.
