Novelty silver pin cushions gained immense popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, reflecting a Victorian penchant for combining utility with whimsical animal and everyday object designs.

These pieces were typically crafted using sterling silver via traditional stamping, chasing, and casting methods, fitted with a silk, velvet, or plush fabric cushion insert secured within the metal cavity.

Authentic pieces usually bear the distinct makers mark of Sampson Mordan & Co, alongside clear sterling silver hallmarks indicating the assay office and date letter, often accompanied by a British registry design number.

As small decorative objects, they fit well displayed on mantelpieces, glass cabinets, or writing desks, where their fine detail can be appreciated up close.

Silver components should be carefully cleaned with a specialist microfibre cloth and non-abrasive silver polish, taking strict care to keep moisture, polishes, and chemicals away from the original fabric cushion.
