Description

A nicely made 18thc iron rushlight with attractive twist to the stem and counterweight which terminates in a curled coil counterweight...it has probably been made in one of the many "rural" village forges that were to be found in every county at this time....the original base is a shaped block of pine, which still has remnants of original paintwork, underneath a very good patina...a lovely example of these very collectable pieces of early lighting.

Possibly Cardiganshire - West Wales. C1760-80. (For a similar example see page 70 - Fig 29a of The Rushlight And Related Holders - A Regional View by Robert Ashley)

A rushlight is an early form of lighting device used primarily during the 17th and 18th centuries, consisting of a spring-clip mechanism that held dried rushes dipped in animal fat or grease to provide a dim flame.

They were typically fashioned by blacksmiths using hand-wrought iron for the spring jaws and stem, frequently mounted into a heavy block of native timber such as oak or pine for stability.

Authentic examples exhibit genuine blacksmith tool marks, hand-filed surfaces, period-appropriate oxidisation on the metal, and timber bases showing genuine age-related wear and patination.

This type of historical artefact works effectively as a sculptural object on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table, adding textural contrast and historical depth to minimal or rustic schemes.

Preservation requires keeping the item in a stable environment away from high humidity to prevent rust on the iron and desiccation of the wood, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly if protection is required.
