The Empire style emerged in France during the early 19th century under Napoleon, drawing heavy inspiration from the classical civilisations of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. It is characterised by symmetrical proportions, militaristic motifs, and the prominent use of gilt bronze and classical urn forms.

Authentic period pieces were typically constructed from cast bronze, often with fire-gilt or patinated finishes, combined with solid blocks of natural stone such as marble or porphyry. Components were individually cast and hand-chased before being assembled with threaded metal rods or pinned joints.

Authentication involves examining the casting quality for fine hand-chased details, checking for period-appropriate patination and oxidisation on the metal surfaces, and inspecting the construction joints for hand-cut screws or peg fittings rather than modern fasteners.

These pieces function as sculptural focal points and can be integrated by placing them on heavy wooden consoles, desks, or mantelpieces to anchor a room. Pairing them with simple, neutral shades allows the classical metalwork and stone bodies to stand out without visual clutter.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical polishes, abrasive cleaners, or water on patinated metal or porous stone. Maintaining stable indoor humidity levels prevents corrosion of the metal and degradation of the stone base.
