Silver photo frames became widely popular during the Victorian and Edwardian eras as portable photography advanced, allowing families to display miniature portraits of loved ones on desks and mantelpieces.

Authentic period frames typically feature a thin sheet of sterling silver over a wooden or composition core, often backed with velvet or leather, and supported by a hinged metal strut.

Authenticity is verified by checking for official hallmarks indicating the metal purity, makers mark, assay office, and year of manufacture, alongside evidence of period craftsmanship like hand-engraving.

An antique silver frame adds a touch of understated elegance when placed on a bookshelf, bedside table, or office desk, contrasting nicely against contemporary minimalism.

Silver frames should be cleaned gently with a specialised microfibre cloth and non-abrasive silver polish, taking care to avoid damaging any velvet backing or delicate engraved details.
