Description

A fantastic antique burr yew Carlton House desk, made in England and dating from around the 1900-1920 period.

This is of outstanding quality with many lovely features. It is a great size, with lots of storage space in the curved upper section and lower drawers. It stands on tapered legs with brass casters, there is an inset leather writing surface which has tooled edges and a gorgeous patina. The top surfaces and drawer fronts are beautifully cross banded, there is a pierced brass upper gallery and high quality brass handles. The drawers have fine, hand cut dovetailed joints and this has a beautifully finished back, it looks amazing from all angles.

The burr yew wood grain patterns and colour tones are stunning, we have had this re-polished and the condition is excellent for its age.

A Carlton House desk is a distinctive style of writing desk featuring a curved superstructure fitted with small drawers and pigeonholes, first created in the late 18th century for Carlton House, the London residence of the Prince of Wales.

These desks are traditionally constructed using fine timber veneers such as burr yew, mahogany, or satinwood over solid secondary woods, often featuring hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass gallery rails, and dovetail joinery.

Authentication involves examining the hand-cut dovetailing in the drawers, the quality of the timber grain, patination on the hardware, and traditional joinery methods consistent with the Georgian or Victorian eras.

An antique writing desk can be integrated into a modern workspace or living area by pairing it with minimalist seating to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity and temperature, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading, applying microcrystalline wax to the wood, and cleaning the leather insert with specialist saddle soap.
