FAQs

Art Deco shagreen items gained immense popularity during the 1920s and 1930s, utilising dyed shark or ray skin to create luxurious, textured surfaces for everyday pocket objects and vanity sets.

Vesta cases from this period are generally constructed with a sterling silver or base metal frame, often embellished with outer coverings such as shagreen, enamel, or leather, alongside interior striking surfaces.

Authentication involves examining the natural pebble pattern and calcium deposits of genuine ray skin, checking for period-appropriate silver hallmarks, and assessing the wear patterns and patina consistent with age.

This type of small collectible object is typically displayed on a surface tray, within a glass cabinet, or on a bookshelf alongside other curiosities to add texture and historical interest.

Shagreen should be kept away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to prevent the natural skin from drying out, fading, or warping over time.
