FAQs

The X-frame stool design traces its roots back to ancient classical forms, such as the Roman curule chair, which experienced revivals during the Renaissance and the 19th-century Victorian era. These pieces were often placed in bay windows or hallways of stately homes to provide comfortable yet formal seating without obstructing natural light.

Authentic pieces from this period were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, featuring hand-carved details, spiral-turned stretchers, and mortise and tenon joinery. Upholstery typically utilised traditional horsehair stuffing, webbed foundations, and heavy woven textiles or needlepoint covers secured with decorative brass gimp pins.

Authentication relies on examining the timber grain, patina, and construction markers. Genuine Victorian pieces exhibit natural oxidisation in the mahogany, hand-cut joinery, forged iron or early brass fixings, and wear patterns consistent with age, whereas reproductions often display machine-tooled joints and artificial distressing.

This versatile item can be styled at the foot of a bed, beneath a deep bay window, or as an accent piece in a living room to introduce textural contrast and historical character. Pair it with neutral modern upholstery or minimalist surroundings to let the traditional carved woodwork stand out as a focal point.

Maintenance requires keeping the mahogany nourished with high-quality microcrystalline wax applied sparingly, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and using professional upholstery cleaning methods for the textile top. Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth to protect the polished wood surface.
