Silver tankards emerged as prestigious drinking vessels in Britain during the 17th century, frequently used for ale, beer, and cider by the affluent classes. Over subsequent centuries, their designs evolved from cylindrical vessels with flat lids to tapered body shapes with reinforced bands and scroll handles.

Authentic period tankards are crafted from sterling silver, typically marked with British hallmarks indicating the assay office, maker, and year of production. Construction generally involves sheet silver shaped into a tapered cylinder, reinforced with applied horizontal bands or mouldings, and securely joined to a cast scroll handle.

Identification relies on examining maker marks, town marks, and date letters stamped directly into the metal surface, which correspond to official assay office records. Additionally, genuine older pieces exhibit appropriate surface wear, hand-beaten or soldered seams, and a distinct weight and patina consistent with historical manufacturing techniques.

An antique silver tankard functions effectively as a decorative display piece on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard, reflecting ambient light and introducing metallic contrast. It can also be utilised practically as a desktop container for pens or as a small vase for floral arrangements.

Preservation requires regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and occasional polishing with a specialised, non-abrasive silver cleaner to remove tarnish without harming the metal. Storage should be in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and high humidity to minimise oxidisation.
