Description

A fantastic George III period mahogany chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1790-1810 period.

It is of outstanding quality, it is very heavy and well built. It’s a great size with lots of storage space inside the generous drawers. There are lovely brass handles and escutcheons, which are original. It has a useful brushing slide under the top & this sits on bracket feet.

The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and patina, we have just had this re-polished, the condition is great for its age. There are various small marks and indentations beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

The Georgian period spans the reigns of the first four Georges from 1714 to 1830, characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and a heavy reliance on imported timbers like mahogany as trade routes expanded.

Master cabinetmakers predominantly utilised solid mahogany and pine for secondary woods, employing hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer construction and solid brass batwing or swan-neck handles with backplates.

Authenticity is verified by inspecting drawer linings for hand-cut dovetails, looking for natural timber shrinkage, uniform hand-planed surfaces, and original brass hardware fixings with period-appropriate screw threads.

Pairing a historic timber piece with contemporary minimalist decor, neutral walls, and streamlined lighting creates a balanced focal point that highlights the rich grain and warm patina of the wood.

Protect the timber from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, clean gently using a soft, dry cloth, and nourish the surface periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
