An antique Regency period Old Sheffield silver plate wine or decanter wagon trolley, dating from around 1830, designed to serve port or wine across the dining table. The piece comprises twin coasters joined by two curved reeded bars, constructed from silver plate with wood bases, showing a silver and warm wooden colour palette with polished metallic finishes and visible signs of age including minor copper showing through. Each circular coaster features a flared mount with curved edges and shell and scroll borders, housing turned wooden inserts with visible grain patterns and a central Old Sheffield plate disc boss. Measuring 34 cm in length with individual coaster diameters of 17 cm, this functional wine accessory sits on four ivory working wheels beneath. Today, this antique drinks trolley functions as an elegant serving accessory on a dining table or sideboard top during dinner parties, or stands as a decorative display piece holding vintage decanters in a traditional living room or study. The twin coaster design allows for easy movement of two bottles simultaneously between guests. The classic Regency styling complements period interiors, traditional dining rooms, or home bars styled with antique silver and glassware accessories.

FAQs

A wine trolley, or coaster wagon, is a wheeled tabletop piece designed during the Georgian and Regency eras to pass wine decanters around a dining table without scratching polished surfaces.

These trolleys were created by fusing thin layers of silver to a copper core, combining cast silver decorative rims with turned wooden base inserts to absorb moisture.

Authentic Old Sheffield plate often exhibits visible seam lines, slight copper exposure along worn edges, and turned wood coaster bases fitted with central silver bosses.

Display the trolley on a sideboard, bar cart, or dining table filled with glass decanters to add historical interest and functional charm to social gatherings.

Polish the metallic surfaces gently with a soft cloth and specialized silver foam, taking care to avoid wetting the wooden coaster inserts to prevent warping.
