This antique Chakhansur Baluch main carpet originates from Western Afghanistan around 1890, created in the traditional tribal style. Produced from wool with a tight weave and natural dyes, the piece displays rich red tones across the field, outlined in dark indigo blue with ivory highlights around the multi-bordered edges and classic long flat-weave kilim ends. The design incorporates repeated dark blue geometric motifs and stepped borders over a deep red ground, complete with a good pile showing slight even wear and one very small old repair. The rug measures 380 cm high, 216 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. It is suitable for normal domestic use on the floor of a gentleman's library or similar living space.

Chakhansur Baluch carpets are traditional hand-knotted floor coverings produced by Baluch nomadic tribes in southwestern Afghanistan, characterised by repetitive geometric motifs, dark red and indigo palettes, and flat-woven kilim ends.

These carpets are hand-woven using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and warp structures, often dyed with natural plant and mineral dyes to produce rich terracotta, madder red, indigo, and dark brown tones.

Authentic period examples feature soft wool quality, subtle natural dye variations known as abrash, precise geometric knotting, original striped flat-weave kilim ends, and an absence of harsh synthetic dyes.

A tribal carpet anchors modern living spaces by introducing textural contrast and grounded colour tones, pairing effectively with minimal contemporary furniture, polished concrete floors, or traditional dark timber schemes.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush removes surface dust, while immediate spot-cleaning with cold water and periodic specialist dry washing preserve the integrity of hand-spun wool and natural dyes.
