Description

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George V English cast sterling silver tank ornament/paperweight; part of our military related silverware collection.

This exceptional antique George V cast sterling silver ornament has been realistically modelled in the form of a British heavy tank of the First World War*.

This silver ornament has been embellished with details reproducing the tank's rivets, track treads and pipes.

Due to the size and weight of the piece it can be determined that this versatile piece was specially commissioned to be used as a silver paperweight or desk ornament.

Such hallmarked English examples are becoming increasingly difficult to locate and are rare to the market.

* This heavy tank design can be identified by the distinctive rhomboidal shape, with a high climbing face. This style of tank was designed to cross trenches of all widths and depths which were found on the battlefields in WWI. More than two thousand British heavy tanks were produced in a variety of marks, and the manufacture was discontinued, as expected, at the end of the war.

Condition

This antique silver tank ornament is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the tank are all very clear.

Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this antique piece of silverware.

The George V period spans the reign of King George V from 1910 to 1936, characterised by a blend of traditional craftsmanship and early 20th-century commemorative designs often influenced by wartime events.

These pieces were typically cast or fabricated from sterling silver, often utilising techniques such as hand-chasing, embossing, and detailed soldering to achieve realistic military or figurative forms.

Authenticity is verified by examining the hallmarks, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark for sterling silver, a town assay office mark, and a date letter corresponding to the George V era.

An antique silver ornament adds a touch of historical interest and polished contrast when displayed on a dark wood executive desk, a minimalist bookshelf, or a glass-topped coffee table.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a specialist non-abrasive silver polish to preserve the delicate details and hallmarks, and stored in a low-humidity environment to minimise tarnish.
