Victorian silver tankards and mugs were produced in large quantities during the 19th century, serving both practical drinking functions and as display pieces or presentation items for milestones and sports.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid sterling silver, often formed via spinning or raising techniques, featuring applied handles and weighted or stepped bases.

Authentic pieces carry British hallmarks stamped directly into the metal, which include a makers mark, the lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark such as the anchor for Birmingham, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of assay.

A silver tankard can be displayed as a decorative accent on a mantelpiece or bookshelf, or utilised practically as a desktop pencil holder or a vase for small floral arrangements.

Preserve antique silver by storing it in low-humidity environments, handling it with soft cloths to avoid oils, and cleaning it sparingly with specialised non-abrasive silver polish only when necessary.
