This antique Baluch prayer rug from the Khorassan region of Eastern Persia dates to circa 1900 and displays an unusual colour palette with a terracotta orange field, dark blue and brown geometric grid motifs, and white border highlights. The hand-knotted wool rug exhibits a repeating lotus leaf or tree of life design across the field and side hand placements, enclosed by decorative latch-hook borders and original kilim ends at both extremities. Visible details include slight even wear, a good pile with soft glossy wool, and distinctive stepped mihrab architecture outlined in white. Measuring 135 cm high by 85 cm wide and 1 cm deep, the piece offers a practical size for display as a decorative wall hanging or for placement in a gentleman's library or similar interior setting suitable for light domestic use.

Baluch prayer rugs were woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic Baluchi tribes inhabiting the Khorassan region of north-eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. These textiles typically feature a architectural mihrab motif representing a prayer niche, designed for portability and daily religious use.

These rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced wool for the pile, often bound onto a wool or goat hair warp and weft. Dyes were traditionally derived from natural plant and mineral sources, yielding deep terracotta, indigo, madder red, and dark brown shades.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-bound selvedges, slight variations in dye shades known as abrash, and a soft, flexible wool foundation. The design almost always incorporates a rectangular or arched prayer niche (mihrab) at one end alongside geometric tree or grid motifs.

A small antique prayer rug can be styled as a focal accent on a hardwood floor, layered over a neutral sisal carpet, or mounted on a wall as a decorative textile artwork to add texture and historical character.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotary beater bar to protect the pile knots. Position a quality rug underlay beneath it to prevent slipping and wear, and consult a specialist rug restorer for periodic cleaning.
