Silver cigarette cases became widespread during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a fashionable accessory for carrying and protecting cigarettes, often featuring intricate hand-engraved motifs and maker marks.

These items are typically crafted from solid sterling silver or continental silver, utilising traditional metalworking techniques such as repousse, chasing, engine-turning, and hand engraving.

Authentic pieces usually bear clear hallmarks stamped onto the interior rims or bezel, detailing the metal purity, assay office, makers mark, and date letter.

Such pieces make excellent decorative objects when displayed open or closed on a coffee table tray, desk, or bookshelf alongside books and other small curiosities.

Preservation involves storing pieces in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and polishing gently with a specialised microfibre cloth and non-abrasive silver cleaner only when necessary to preserve the patina.
