Vesta cases, or matchsafes, became widely popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a safe way to carry wax vestas in the pocket before the widespread use of safety matches and lighters.

They were predominantly made from sterling silver, often featuring hallmarking, hinged lids, integrated striker ridges on the base, and hand-embossed, chased, or applied figural motifs.

Authentic pieces typically feature clear British silver hallmarks indicating the assay office, date letter, and sterling standard, alongside crisp hand-finished detailing on the metal.

These small decorative items work well displayed inside glass tabletop cabinets, on a bookshelf alongside small art objects, or styled on a tray on a coffee table.

Clean gently with a specialist non-abrasive silver cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage intricate surface details and historical patination.
