Salvers emerged in the seventeenth century as footed serving vessels for wine and spirits, later evolving into flat presentation trays used for serving tea, coffee, and letters during the Georgian and Victorian eras.

Authentic period salvers are crafted from solid sterling silver, typically hand-beaten or cast, featuring intricate hand-chased or engraved scrolling motifs and supported by small cast feet.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks struck directly onto the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark indicating sterling purity, a town mark such as the Hibernia for Dublin, and a date letter.

An antique silver salver can be used as a reflective centrepiece on a dining table, placed on a sideboard to hold crystal decanters, or styled on a coffee table to corral small decorative objects.

Preserve antique silver by storing it in a dry, tarnish-resistant environment, washing it gently with warm soapy water when necessary, and using non-abrasive silver polish sparingly only to remove excessive oxidisation.
