FAQs

Standard lamps emerged in the late 19th century as electrification spread, evolving from oil and gas floor-standing lighting fixtures into decorative floor lamps designed to illuminate specific areas of a room.

Traditional standard lamps were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, often featuring turned columns, weighted bases for stability, and brass fittings.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, traditional hand-turned woodworking techniques, aged timber patination, and cast-iron or weighted wooden bases with vintage-style internal wiring channels.

Pairing a wooden floor lamp with contemporary seating creates a balanced contrast, while positioning it beside a reading chair or in an empty corner adds vertical warmth and layered ambient lighting.

Preserve antique timber by applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and ensuring that any electrical components are tested or reworn by a qualified professional.
