Pearlware is a type of refined earthenware developed in the late 18th century in Staffordshire, England, characterised by a faint bluish glaze applied to whiten the body.

These items were fashioned from refined clay with a lead glaze containing a small amount of cobalt oxide, often featuring moulded basketweave textures and hand-painted or transfer-printed central motifs.

Authenticity is identified through potting characteristics such as footrim style, glaze pooling with a bluish tinge, crazing patterns, and period-appropriate maker marks or lack thereof.

Antique ceramics add texture and historical contrast when displayed on plate racks, mounted on walls, or styled within open shelving and cabinetry.

Antique ceramics should be hand washed gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent and soft cloths, avoiding dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and extreme thermal shock.
