17th century
Description

Portrait of the Hon. James Thynne (c. 1680-1704), full-length, in the gardens of Longleat House, seated beside a fountain, holding a shell beneath water spouting from a horn blown by a cherub on a dolphin. A glimpse of part of Longleat House can be seen upper left. Oil on canvas in a period giltwood frame, decorated with leaves and acorns. C. 1682.

Dimensions: 145 x 123cm (57 x 48in) in frame

Provenance:

Ex Longleat House, Wiltshire

Private collection, Bath

James Thynne was the youngest son of Thomas Thynne, 1st Viscount Weymouth and Frances Finch of Longleat House, Wiltshire. He died in his youth and his Aunt, Anne Kingsmill Finch, Countess of Winchilsea (1661-1720), wrote a moving poem on his death. He was buried in the family vault at Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire. A mezzotint of this painting by William Faithorne the Younger is held in the Royal Collection.

Johann Kerseboom (d.1708) was the nephew of Frederick Kerseboom and first worked in Germany before coming to England in the 1680's where his sitters included the 'Electress Sophia Dorothea' (known from a mezzotint by William Faithorne). His early works were influenced by William Wissing through his early collaboration with him but he developed his own style, being best demonstrated in his portrait of 'Robert Boyle', of which several versions are found in the Royal Collection and the National Portrait Gallery. He collaborated with his close friend Jan Van der Vaart on works such as the portrait of 'Thomas Osborne, First Duke of Leeds' (1704, London NPG) and the portrait of 'Gilbert, Fourth Earl of Coventry ( dated 1704, Antony House, Cornwall) which is signed by both artists. He died in London in 1708, leaving his estate to Van der Vaart. In his words 'I stand indebted and doe owe unto my very loveing Friend John Vander Vaart of the parish of St Paul Covent Garden in the county of Middlesex a considerable sume of money which I am not at present able to pay....Therefore in Satisfaction I give and bequeath u to the said John Vander Vaart All my Estate'.

This seventeenth-century oil painting on canvas by Johann Kerseboom depicts the Honourable James Thynne seated full-length in the gardens of Longleat House beside a stone fountain, holding a shell beneath water spouting from a horn blown by a cherub on a dolphin, with a glimpse of Longleat House visible in the upper left. The work measures 145 cm high by 123 cm wide and is housed in an ornate period giltwood frame decorated with carved leaves and acorns in warm gold, muted blue, and earth tones. The composition includes muted blue draped classical fabric alongside rich brown and green tones in the background landscape and foliage. In a home today, this Baroque English Country House artwork hangs appropriately above the mantel in a principal reception room or study. The canvas surface shows age-appropriate craquelure and patina typical of the period, while the giltwood frame displays subtle wear along the outer mouldings and relief decoration. The portrait presents a significant piece of historical British fine art suitable for traditional interiors and period property settings.

Seventeenth-century European portraiture, particularly from the Baroque era, often featured dramatic lighting, rich fabrics, allegorical symbols, and formal landscape or architectural backgrounds to convey status and identity.

Artists during this period primarily painted with hand-ground mineral pigments bound in drying oils on stretched flax linen canvas, usually housed within hand-carved and gilded wooden frames.

Authentic period paintings typically display natural craquelure across the paint layers, aged timber stretchers with historical metal oxidation, and hand-carved gesso application on the frame moulding.

A historical oil portrait functions as an intriguing focal point when hung above a modern sideboard or fireplace mantel, creating a balanced dialogue between antique fine art and minimalist decor.

Display the canvas away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, dust the frame gently with a dry soft brush, and engage a professional conservator for varnish maintenance.
