Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. This antique Kurdish tribal runner rug originates from North West Persia during the first quarter of the twentieth century. Hand-knotted from lustrous wool with a cotton warp and pink wool weft, the piece displays a dark chocolate ground populated by three prominent stepped arrow pointer medallions in shades of rust, orange, blue, and cream. The composition incorporates stylised bird and tree motifs within pink quarter spandrels at both ends, all framed by intricate multi-coloured geometric borders. The pile exhibits slight wear down to the dark chocolate foundation in places, alongside secured ends and sides with short fringed edges. Measuring 340 cm high by 89 cm wide and 1 cm deep, this practical narrow format functions well as a decorative floor covering in a hallway, corridor, or narrow entrance space in a home today. The hand-washed wool textile brings traditional nomadic craftsmanship and rich earthy colour tones to interior settings.

FAQs

Kurdish tribal rugs originating from Northwest Persia are recognised for their robust wool-on-wool construction, high pile density, and bold geometric iconography. Weavers historically utilised saturated vegetable dyes and incorporated symbolic motifs representing regional flora, fauna, and nomadic life.

Traditional Kurdish runners are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. Dyes were organically sourced from local plants, roots, and minerals, resulting in rich terracottas, deep indigo blues, and natural dark earth tones.

Authentic antique pieces display abrash, which refers to subtle natural colour variations within the yarn batches across the field. Additional indicators include a flexible hand-knotted structure, minor asymmetrical pattern variations typical of village looms, and natural wool wear consistent with age.

A narrow tribal runner adds visual depth, colour, and textural contrast to long entry hallways, corridors, or alongside kitchen islands. Placing a historical graphic textile against modern hardwood or stone flooring creates a balanced, layered interior aesthetic.

Maintain wool runners by vacuuming regularly using suction only, avoiding rotating beater bars that can damage delicate fibers. Spills should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, and a high-quality rug pad should be placed underneath to prevent slipping and reduce pile friction.
