Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Gilded bronze wall lights, often referred to as appliques, gained prominence in European interior design during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly within French chateaux and formal drawing rooms. These fixtures were designed to reflect candlelight and illuminate grand spaces effectively.

Authentic pieces are typically cast in bronze or brass and finished with gold leaf or mercury gilding (ormolu). Artisans used lost-wax casting and hand-chasing techniques to achieve intricate surface details and relief ornamentation.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the casting quality, weight, hand-finished detailing, and the nature of any screw threads or fixings, which often reveal older manufacturing methods. Additionally, signs of natural oxidisation and wear on the gilding indicate age.

Pairing ornate antique wall lights with neutral walls and minimalist architecture creates a striking contrast that highlights their craftsmanship. They work particularly well when installed flanking a mirror, fireplace, or headboard to add layered ambient lighting.

Gilded bronze should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical cleaning agents, abrasive materials, or polishes, as these can strip the delicate gold leaf or patinated finish.
