This antique Caucasian Shirvan wool prayer rug, dating from 1880, displays a traditional design with a central ivory ground covered in a geometric floral lattice pattern and flowering shrubs. The upper section features a stepped mihrab prayer arch containing a distinctive design complete with two small water or oil ewers at the top. The piece is finished with multi-coloured geometric diamond borders containing blue, red, brown, and cream tones, along with fringed ends at the top and bottom. The textile shows slight even wear with a good pile and has been hand washed. Measuring 162 cm high, 103 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, this item functions well as a floor covering in a gentleman's library or study to add traditional textile warmth to the interior scheme.

Shirvan prayer rugs originated in the eastern Caucasus region during the 19th century, characterised by finely hand-knotted wool construction, geometric lattice motifs, and a distinct arch design representing a mihrab.

These textiles were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool foundation, utilising natural vegetable dyes to produce ivory, indigo blue, madder red, and saffron yellow tones.

Authentic pieces feature wool knots on a fine warp structure, natural dye variation known as abrash, characteristic geometric prayer arches, and distinct multi-banded border guard patterns typical of Caucasian weaving.

A historic Caucasian rug serves as a textural layer on hardwood or polished concrete floors, pairing effortlessly with both minimalist contemporary furniture and traditional wooden pieces.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, place a non-slip pad underneath to reduce friction, rotate annually to balance wear, and consult a professional textile restorer for specialist cleaning.
