Victorian jewellery spans the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) and is typically divided into three distinct periods: Early, Mid, and Late Victorian, each characterised by specific motifs, metals, and emotional symbolism.

Jewellery from this period frequently utilised 9ct and 15ct gold, often paired with precious and semi-precious gemstones such as rubies, pearls, and diamonds, set using traditional hand-crafting techniques.

Authentic pieces often feature period-appropriate hallmarks, handcrafted settings, hand-cut gemstones, and closures such as shepherd hooks or old screw-backs consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing methods.

These historic pieces add a layer of individual character to contemporary attire and can be paired with minimalist clothing to allow the intricate metalwork and coloured stones to serve as a focal point.

Preservation requires storing pieces in a fabric-lined box away from moisture, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners which can damage fragile settings, and gently wiping them with a soft, dry cloth after wear.
