Can I use modern LED bulbs?

Modern LED bulbs work fine in antique ceiling lights once they have been professionally rewired. The fittings are usually updated with standard bayonet or Edison screw lamp holders. LEDs generate far less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs. This protects fragile old glass shades from thermal stress.

I have an old house with very low ceilings and I am wondering if a period fixture will just get in the way of everyone walking through the room?

Flush-mounted antique ceiling lights are the traditional solution here. Edwardian and Art Deco designers produced thousands of shallow bowl fittings specifically for houses with lower clearance. You can also modify chain-hung pendants by removing most of the links. The ceiling rose and the gallery then sit much closer together.

Do they need special wiring?

Most dealers supply lights already rewired to current standards. The internal wiring uses multi-core flex and the metal body needs a proper earth connection. Always ask an electrician to install them.

My living room has a large decorative plaster ceiling rose in the centre and I need to know how these old heavy lights attach to the ceiling without pulling the plaster down.

Antique ceiling lights attach to the structure, not the plaster rose itself. The fixing requires a sturdy hook screwed directly into the wooden ceiling joist above the plasterboard. The brass ceiling cup on the light simply slides up the central tube or chain to hide this structural hook. The weight is borne by the timber joist.
