What is a bureau bookcase?

A bureau bookcase simply adds a tall glazed or panelled cabinet on top of the standard desk section. The upper section held bound ledgers and reference volumes. Most were made as two separate pieces that locate together on internal dowels.

My grandad left me a desk but the front drops down on chains instead of sliding wooden supports. Is that normal for these?

Chains or brass quadrants rarely appear on an English antique Georgian bureau. That mechanism belongs more to the continent or to later Edwardian revival pieces. Traditional British construction relies on wooden lopers. If your piece uses chains, it likely dates outside the Georgian period or suffered a later modification.

How do I remove the drawers?

Pull them forward until they stop. You then lift the front edge slightly to clear the wooden runners inside the carcase. Take care with the wider lower drawers. They twist easily if you pull unevenly from one side. Always use both brass handles at the same time.

I have noticed the inside arrangement of small drawers and gaps is very plain on some but quite elaborate with carved doors on others. Why is that?

The interior finish depended entirely on what the original buyer wanted to pay. A basic country piece has simple dividers. Urban workshops offered shaped drawer fronts, inlaid banding and architectural details like carved arches. You find the best interiors on mahogany pieces built for wealthy merchants.
