Description

A rare Scottish Regency mahogany library secretaire.

Interesting to see is, that there are a lot of

small special drawers (inlaid with the letters of the alphabet) and a secret compartment in

the top section.

In the under section, behind the doors,

there are folio slides.

Still with the typical Edinburgh pattern

original brass mounts and handles

and with the beautiful old patination,

circa: 1810

A Regency secretaire chest is a 19th-century multi-functional storage piece featuring a deep top drawer that pulls forward and drops down to reveal an enclosed desk with small drawers, pigeonholes, and a writing slope over lower storage.

These pieces were typically constructed using flame mahogany veneers over solid pine or oak carcases, accented with brass beaded mouldings, ivory or bone keyhole escutcheons, and wool baize or leather writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary woods inside drawers, original iron locks, brass hardware showing natural tarnish, and subtle irregularities indicative of hand-tooling.
