What does Globe Wernicke style mean in a title?

Globe Wernicke appears in 129 of 315 titles, but many of those qualify it as "style", "type" or "similar to". It has become shorthand for the form itself. As a maker name proper, Globe Wernicke is used by three dealers on Sellingantiques.

How many sections do these usually have?

Section counts named in titles run from two up to six. Three, four and five are the commonest. Two-section stacks sit at the cheap end of the range, and the tallest configurations pair six sections with a cupboard and drawer in the base.

Are stacking bookcases sold in pairs?

Pairs turn up in 33 titles, roughly a tenth of the category, including matched pairs of the same pattern. Sets go further. A set of three office bookcases and a full suite of oak stacks are the highest-placed titles in the run.

Which woods do these come in?

Oak is named in 179 titles and mahogany in 55. Golden oak and limed oak both appear as finishes. Walnut and red walnut surface occasionally, and one Art Deco stack combines walnut with coromandel.

Can these hold anything other than books?

Filing cabinet appears in eight titles, where a stack combines with or is sold as filing units. Other listings record a section fitted as a secretaire, and one a writing desk with drawers, so the form was built as office furniture as well as shelving.

How often do stacking bookcases come up for sale?

Around 30 come to market on Sellingantiques in a year. Sixty-three different dealers have listed one, so supply is spread across the trade rather than coming from a handful of shops. Corner sections are the outlier: only two titles in the whole run describe an angled unit made to turn a run of shelving.
