Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th-century Chippendale period partners desk belongs in a country house library or a traditional home office as a substantial freestanding workspace. The piece is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and a dark leather insert fitted into the top surface. It features a twin pedestal design incorporating fielded panels on the cupboard doors and sides, supported by a plinth base. Hardware includes a single central frieze drawer fitted with a brass drop handle. The dark leather writing surface shows a smooth finish, while the timber displays a rich patina across the warm brown grain. Practical dimensions measure 83 cm high, 188 cm wide, and 118 cm deep. The configuration allows two people to work opposite one another in a study or library setting.

FAQs

A partners desk is a large double-sided desk created in 19th-century Britain designed to allow two people to sit opposite each other and work simultaneously.

These desks are typically constructed from solid mahogany or oak with flame mahogany veneers, brass handle fittings, and a gold-tooled leather writing surface on the top.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetail joints, double-sided functional drawers or cupboard doors, brass lever locks, and wear consistent with age around the plinth base.

Position the desk in the centre of a home office or library to highlight its finished double-sided construction, paired with structured leather armchairs.

Clean the wood surfaces with a soft cloth and apply beeswax periodically, while maintaining the leather insert with a dedicated leather wax or balm.
