Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cloisonne is an ancient decorative technique where metallic wire, usually copper or brass, is bent to form raised compartments (cloisons) on a metal vessel base. Enamel paste in various colours is applied into these sections, fired in a kiln, and polished flush with the wire rims. Originating in the Near East, the craft was refined in China during the Ming Dynasty and flourished through the Qing Dynasty and early 20th century.

Traditional cloisonne jars feature a formed copper or brass body fitted with matching lidded covers. Thin wire strips are soldered to the metal surface to create intricate motifs, such as flora and birds. Vitreous glass enamel powder mixed into paste fills the compartments before repeated heat firings, finishing with manual grinding and gilded brass borders.

Authentic period cloisonne typically exhibits fine wirework, slight surface pitting or pinholes from historical kiln firing, and hand-polished edges with natural age oxidisation on exposed brass or copper bases. Victorian and turn-of-the-century examples often depict classical motifs like peonies, perching birds, and geometric scrollwork, with heavier metal weight than modern machine-made reproductions.

Place a symmetrical pair of lidded cloisonne jars on a sideboard, fireplace mantelpiece, or console table to establish visual anchor points. Their intricate patterns and rich colour palettes contrast well against neutral backdrops, dark wood surfaces, or contemporary lacquered furniture, adding textural depth to modern minimalist or maximalist settings.

Clean enamel surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pastes, or submersion in water, as moisture can seep through hairline fissures in the enamel and oxidize the internal metal structure. Protect exposed metal rims by dusting carefully without disturbing any original patina.
